Fifty years ago, scientists discovered a strange, cold glow coming at us from everywhere in space. They soon realized that this ‘cosmic microwave background’ was the smoking gun from the Big Bang that started the Universe. But where did the stars and galaxies come from? And what lies at the edge of the Universe? What about parallel or multiple universes? The answers seem to lead only to more questions, but science continues to fit together pieces in the cosmic puzzle and surprising us along the way: supermassive black holes, huge networks of galaxies, dark matter and the even more mysterious dark energy.
