1923 Silent Comedy Classic “Safety Last!” Starring Harold Lloyd With Live Piano Score By Composer Robert Bruce

HAMILTON – August 6, 2013 –
Composer/pianist Robert Bruce performs his live original score to the 1923 classic silent comedy film “Safety Last!”starring Harold Lloyd on Monday, August 26 – 8 pm at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 1140 King Street West, Hamilton, Ontario.

The image of Harold Lloyd hanging from the clock in Safety Last! remains one of the most iconic of all Hollywood films, and not just those of the silent era.  Easily the most successful and far-reaching film starring Lloyd, Safety Last! did indeed seem to capture some particularly subtle yet powerful Hollywood magic, and it also contains quite a number of memorable scenes and gags.  Produced by Hal Roach Studios and released in 1923, this film, like many films starring Lloyd, also really captures something of life in the 20s, particularly cosmopolitan life.

Of particular interest at this time is that this film has just recently been digitally remastered and re-released in various formats. The new version is stunningly clear and sharp and will be shown at this August 26 program.

Composer/pianist Robert Bruce’s live score for “Safety Last!” follows the story and action pretty closely, weaving in and out of a variety of musical moods and styles ranging from the “Jazz Age” sounds popular in the 20s to more reflective and descriptive neo-classical pieces which have somewhat become his own musical trademark.

WHERE: St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 1140 King Street West, Hamilton, Ontario

WHEN: Monday, August 26, 2013 at 8 pm, doors open at 7:30

About the Composer/Pianist

Since the late 1970s composer/pianist Robert Bruce has developed a diverse catalog of original music which includes: piano repertoire for students; music for film, television and animation; orchestral and piano works, and a collection of artsongs which he performs with his “Classical Nouveau” ensemble.

Working for the past decade with two of the largest Film/TV Music Publishers in the world (Sonoton, based in Germany, and Audio Network, based in the UK), Robert’s music has now appeared in hundreds of films and of television shows worldwide.  2012 was particularly active, with his music being used in numerous high-profile projects including the Honda Ad aired during the 2012 Super Bowl that features Mathew Broderick revamping his famous Ferris Bueller role, and in the trailer for the 2012 Hollywood feature “The Babymakers” starring Olivia Munn and Paul Schneider.

Earlier in 2013 Robert presented a special Live Music/Silent Film program in Hollywood for the film production community as part of a special event presented by Sonoton and their North America distributor APM (Associated Production Music) that, in part, highlighted the Silent Film Piano Music CD he recorded last year.

Ralph Nader at Bryan Prince Bookseller

For the past forty-five years RALPH NADER has challenged corporations, government agencies, and institutions to be more accountable to the public. In 1965, Unsafe at Any Speed changed the face of the automobile industry and made Ralph Nader a household name. As a result of his efforts, cars have more safety features. His lobbying and writing on the food industry insured that the food we buy is required to pass strict guidelines before reaching the consumer. One of his greatest achievements was the 1974 amendment to the American Freedom of Information Act that gave increased public access to government documents. This brought freedom of press to a new level, resulting in increased access for journalists.

Ralph Nader has co-founded numerous public interest groups including Public Citizen, Critical Mass, Commercial Alert, and the Center for Study of Responsive Law. Nader today continues to be a relentless force for grassroots activism and democratic change in the United States.

The column is the most natural literary form for a citizen’s advocate, and Ralph Nader may be its most robust and forceful practitioner. Told You So: The Big Book of Weekly Columns presents a panoramic portrait of the problems confronting our society and provides examples of the many actions an organized citizenry could and should take to create a more just and environmentally sustainable world. Drawing on decades of experience, Nader’s columns document the consequences of concentrated corporate power; threats to our food, water and air; the corrosive effect of commercialism on our children; the dismantling of worker rights; and the attacks on our civil rights and civil liberties. Nader also offers concrete suggestions to spark citizen action and achieve social change.

Please join us for this special book signing and short presentation with Ralph Nader.

RVSP required as space is limited.

Churchill Park Labyrinth/Peace Garden

The Teaching Gardens in Churchill Park normally go into a quieter maintenance mode over the summer, but the serendipitous gift of the labyrinth/peace garden this year has called us to keep moving forward with our Saturday work parties as we build this wonderful addition to our gardens.  We are hoping to get a good-sized group of volunteers out this coming Saturday, to help our labyrinth designer Martyn Kendrick do a final push on getting the labyrinth to completion.  You’ll find us behind the Plant Lover’s Garden located behind the peacock cage in the Aviary/Community Gardens enclosure. As always, no tools or experience are necessary, and children are more than welcome!  To learn more about the labyrinth, you can check out Martyn’s website at: www.labyrinthkeys.ca.  And of course you can also like us on Facebook athttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Teaching-Gardens-at-Churchill-Park-Westdale/154618977937148 , or follow us on twitter @TeachingGarden
