McMaster Planetarium – Cosmic Collisions

Whether it is the formation of our Moon by a violent collision involving a still-forming Earth, the massive asteroid impact which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, or the eventual merger of our nearest neighbouring galaxy with our own Milky Way Galaxy, cosmic collisions are happening everywhere throughout the Universe. Join us as we learn about collision theories and explore explosive events – both past and future. You will be amazed by the chaos in the early Universe and be left in awe of what beauty such destruction can hold.

McMaster Planetarium – The Divine Sky

For centuries across cultures, the night sky has been a source of “heavenly inspiration”. This presentation will explore the ties between the religions of the world and the physical night sky. Phenomena in astronomy, including meteors, orbiting objects, and eclipses have sparked the curiosity and augmented the understanding of people in all religions all over the world, including both the ancient beliefs of Mayan and Egyptian societies and popular religions still practised today. While sharing some stories and theories from different religious traditions, we will explore the sky that inspired them.

McMaster Planetarium – Journey to the Edge

You already know the Universe is big, but just how big? What is the farthest that we can see, and what does the edge of visible Universe tell us about where we came from? Fifty years ago, scientists discovered a strange, cold glow coming at us from everywhere in space. They soon realized that this ‘cosmic microwave background’ was the smoking gun from the Big Bang that started the Universe. But where did the stars and galaxies come from? And what lies at the edge of the Universe? What about parallel or multiple universes? The answers seem to lead only to more questions, but science continues to fit together pieces in the cosmic puzzle and surprising us along the way: supermassive black holes, huge networks of galaxies, dark matter and the even more mysterious dark energy. Come explore the Universe and journey to the edge.

Important Safety Reminders for Family Fireworks – Canada Day

Ainslie Wood Westdale,

Please review the following media release from Hamilton Emergency Services – Fire regarding Family-Type Fireworks. Note that according to the current by-law, fireworks can only be set off on your own property and only during the two days preceding or following Victoria Day and Canada Day (otherwise it is illegal to set off fireworks without a permit).  Also they can’t be set off after 11 pm.

Councillor McHattie would like to know whether you have experienced fireworks being set off later than 11 pm or outside the five day allowable period in your neighbourhood – if you have, can you provide some details?

Thanks!

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase and set off fireworks. Appoint one adult to be in charge of the handling and discharge of fireworks. Prior to their use, carefully read and follow the label instructions on fireworks packaging including those for required clearances and set-backs.
  • Set up a ‘safe zone’ and keep all spectators, children and pets out of this area. Ensure that the ‘safe zone’ is a clear, open space away from buildings, overhead wires and tree branches.
  • Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by. Use a flashlight to see what you are doing.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box, away from the activation area, taking them out one at a time.
  • If not equipped with a base, firmly set the firework at least half its length in a bucket of sand or dirt, angled slightly away from spectators and check the wind direction and speed before lighting.
  • Light only one firework at a time at the tip of the fuse, and never try to light a firework, or hold a lit firework, in your hand. Never lean over a firework at any time.
  • If a firework is a dud or misfires, approach it with caution. Never try to re-light a firework. Leave it for at least 30 minutes and then place it in a bucket of water

Teaching Gardens this Saturday

Yes, I know it’s a long weekend, but Dan and I will be working in the garden from 9 to noon this Saturday, July 2, so if you’re in town and have some time to spare, please join us.

If you aren’t able to help with the gardening, do yourself a favour and stop by to check out the gardens when you get a chance.  Thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers they are looking amazing.  Bernie Mangiola has devoted countless hours to pruning the espaliered apple trees and building the stone knee walls, and Shelli Eisenberg spent hours pruning, weeding, and ‘dressing’ the beds in the Apothecary’s Garden.  Meanwhile in the Plant Lover’s Garden, Marie Allen (and family!) has been labouring alone and unsung getting the jungle under control.  It’s wonderful to see, and there are baby peacocks to boot, so if you’re around this weekend, come check it out!
