Dr. Smit outlines the physical and human processes underlying climate change and its implications for the environment and development. He reviews the roles of science and politics in national and international policy responses, including mitigation and adaption. He describes adaption initiatives in the Arctic, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Chile and Pacific islands. He demonstrates the needs and opportunities for truly interdisciplinary science and practice.
