“Peter Gzowski and the Complexities of Biography” by Rae Fleming

The Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art presents “Peter Gzowski and the Complexities of Biography” by Rae Fleming.  McMaster University Medical Centre, Ewart Angus wing, Room 1A1.  Free.

Devoted listeners of CBC radio programs This Country in the Morning and Morningside knew Peter Gzowski as the “voice of Canada.”  His interviews with guests from all over the country ran the gamut of Canadian culture and politics, brought everyday life into the media, and were credited wit nurturing a low-key, yet unabashed, form of nationalism.  Long before that he started out as a print journalist, praised as something of a boy wonder.  When Peter left the airwaves, and on his death, many Canadians felt they had lost a friend they knew well.

Dr. Rae Fleming’s biography examines the Gzowski persona and the complex man behind it.  He describes every biographer’s struggle with availability and reliability of sources, the tension between objectivity and empathy, and the unexpected discoveries.  He is also author of articles and books about Canadian history and heritage issues.

“Learning to See Faces” with Daphne Maurer

Babies are attracted to people’s faces from the moment they are born, yet newborns do not see faces as adults do, and it takes years for children to become adept at identifying people and their expressions.  Dr. Maurer will draw from extensive psychology research to show how we learn to see, judge, and remember faces–indeed, how we learn to see–and will describe both what happens when this process goes askew and how effects might be ameliorated by new therapies.

Dr. Maurer is a Distinguished University Professor at McMaster University, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a leading authority on infant vision.

(The annual general meeting for members will take place before the talk from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m.)

2012 Pyjama Parade

Pyjama Parade

Frosh Reps on the Pyjama Parade Route

McMaster held its annual pajama parade of first-year students on Wednesday, September 5th.  Leaving campus at the Forsythe entrance, they went east on Sterling, turned left onto Dalewod Crescent to Paisley Avenue North, right onto Dromore Crescent, and then back along Sterling to the campus.  A band led the way followed by groups each wearing its faculty’s colours and led by upper-year students.  More upper-year students from each faculty were stationed at different points along the way to welcome the students and high-five them.  Al Legault, an employee of the McMaster Students Union who has run this event for the last three years, did an excellent job!  It ran like clockwork with incredibly well-behaved kids. There was enough police presence to keep them in control, but it wasn’t over the top.

The students all seemed to really enjoy themselves, and the neighbours who came out to watch also seemed to have fun, especially at Dromore and Paisley. Twyla Hendry and Brian McCarry opened their pool at that corner for the upper-year students to have a dip while they were waiting for the parade to begin, and then again after the parade was finished (about 6:35 p.m.).  One neighbour brought her sprinkler out to the middle of the road to cool off the students stationed on Paisley.  Then the music broke out at Dromore and Paisley, and for about 20-25 minutes there was some cool line dancing. They were wonderful to watch and very well behaved. Perhaps next year more of our permanent residents would like to attend, as I think these neighbours not only will continue with this idea but perhaps also have a hot dog roast for the upper-year volunteers. I’d like to personally thank Al Legault for once again running such a tight ship!
